The addition and renovation to the Helen Kate Furness Library features a second-floor addition atop an existing single-story facility. Due to the building’s rich history, functionality, and cohesiveness, the architect decided to expand the building by constructing a second floor on top of the roof system, precluding the need to break through the current ceiling and roof system. Also included in the scope of work is the renovation of the basement. Various Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements are being constructed including the installation of an elevator, increasing the stack aisles from 36” to 42” as well as new stairways. The vestibule in the main entrance to the library is being expanded to accommodate increased patron use.
