1.29.2009 -A&E Construction has been awarded two contracts by the University of Pennsylvania to construct multiple renovations for the University’s School of Medicine. These projects represent the sixth and seventh projects that A&E has been awarded at the University of Pennsylvania in the past 9 months.
The first project, which is for the Department of Otorhinolaringology (ORL), totals approximately 2,400sf and is divided among two existing buildings and will create offices, laboratories, and testing areas for the department. The majority of the project is located on the 3rd and 6th Floors of the Richards Building – a landmark campus facility designed by Louis Kahn. The remaining 600sf is located in the John Morgan Building. The scope of the project includes selective demolition, new drywall partitions and soffits, radio frequency shielding at the testing booths, new flooring, laboratory casework, and modifications to the mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems, Both buildings will be fully occupied during the construction. The architect for the project is Brawer & Hauptman of Philadelphia.
The second project totals approximately 1,000sf and is located within the Vivarium on the lower level of the Clinical Research Building (CRB) – another campus landmark that was designed by Robert Venturi. This project involves the renovation of existing research laboratories and support spaces to accommodate a new autoclave. The scope of the project includes selective demolition and the removal of an existing two-story stair tower, as well as the construction of a pit and an infill floor for the autoclave. Epoxy flooring will be installed and all surfaces will be covered with epoxy paint. In addition, a new exhaust hood and exhaust system will be installed and medical gases will be supplied to the area. The architect for the Autoclave/CRB project is Jacobs Wyper Architects of Philadelphia.
The construction of both projects is expected to begin in January 2009 with completion scheduled for April 2009.
